Performance Evaluation of Mobile Ad Hoc Network Routing Protocols for Real Time Applications Support

The 8th International Conference on Advances in Communications and Control - COMCON’8, Rethymnon, Greece, June 2001.

Abstract: The need for wireless communication between mobile terminals in environments where no fixed network infrastructure is available, has led to the design of Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs). In such networks the distance between two nodes may exceed the transmission range of their wireless devices, thus requiring the routing of information through intermediate nodes. Several routing protocols have been designed to provide reliable multi-hop communication, and face the difficulties imposed by mobility, limited bandwidth, and the energy constraints of the mobile hosts. The work presented in this paper evaluates the performance of the DSDV, AODV, DSR and TORA Ad Hoc routing protocols, focusing on their suitability to support real time applications. Simulation results are obtained with the aid of the NS-2 network simulator over a wide range of mobility and traffic scenarios.
